BOOKS AND THEATRE TURN A NEW LEAF

The Free Library Of New Hope-Solebury and Bristol Riverside Theatre Collaborate In "From the Page to the Stage”

The Free Library of New Hope and Solebury and Bristol Riverside Theatre (BRT) have combined talents to offer the program From the Page to the Stage. Literary and theatrical insights will soar to new heights as an assortment of works are discussed and critiqued by library and BRT professionals and you! Free and open to the public, the bi-monthly book club forums focus on the upcoming 2010-2011 BRT season and run five Sundays throughout the year from 5:00-6:00 PM at the Free Library of New Hope and Solebury (93 Ferry Street, New Hope). The program will feature a discussion of various books and themes inspired by a BRT theater production, followed by a presentation from a member of the BRT production or staff.

From the Page to the Stage is one of the Library’s major programs this year, and we are delighted to be partners with such a vibrant community organization as Bristol Riverside Theatre,” said John Blady, President of the Board of Trustees at the Library.

The program kicks off on Sunday, September 19, 2010 with a discussion of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Jeffrey Hatcher, running at BRT September 28-October 17. On the fog-bound streets of Victorian-era London, Henry Jekyll's experiments with exotic "powders and tinctures" have brought forth his other self-Edward Hyde, a sensualist and villain free to commit the sins Jekyll is too civilized to comprehend. The two sides battle each other in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse to determine who shall be the master and who his slave. Jeffrey Hatcher has written a sexy and smart play that honors the original but gives a more complex interpretation of mankind’s dual relationship with good and evil. Suggested reading: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson; Mary Reilly by Valerie Martin; or In Search of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Radu Florescu and Raymond McNally.

The fall programming continues on Sunday, November 21, 2010 with a discussion of Old Wicked Songs by John Marans, running at BRT November 16-December 5. Old Wicked Songs is the story of Stephen Hoffman, an American piano prodigy who ventures to Vienna to study, hoping to shatter the artistic block that has plagued his career and reconnect with his music. Mirroring the structures and themes of the piece he studies, Schumann’s song cycle Dichterliebe, this emotionally-packed drama explores the fascinating connections between art and guilt, compassion and identity. Suggested reading: Old Wicked Songs by John Marans; Night by Elie Weisel; or Collected Poems or The Complete Poems or Lyric Poems and Ballads, all by Heinrich Heine.

The new year rings in on Sunday, January 8, 2011 with a discussion of The Little Prince by Rick Cummins and John Scoullar, adapted from the book by Antoine de Saint Exupery running January 25-February 13. Often assumed to be a children’s story, The Little Prince is actually a tale for all ages about understanding how to laugh, love and cry again. In association with puppet creators Monkey Boys, (Avenue Q and Little Shop of Horrors), this beautiful new production uses life sized puppets, live actors, original music and magnificent sets to bring to life the heart-warming story of the Little Prince who gains rare and unique insights into love, loss, and laughter. Suggested reading: The Little Prince or Wind, Sand and Stars, both by Antoine De Saint-Exupery; or The Tale of the Rose: The Love Story Behind The Little Prince by Consuelo De Saint-Exupery.

Arthur Miller’s first great success is on the schedule for Sunday, March 20, 2011 with All My Sons, running March 15-April 3. This winner of the 1947 Tony Award for Best Play is the story of the tragic consequences of a lapse from decency of an ordinary businessman during World War II. With a son missing in action during World War II, and the accusations that he knowingly manufactured and sold defective airplane parts that killed hundreds of American soldiers, Joe Keller’s whole life is now in question. Arthur Miller’s masterpiece hits the emotional bulls-eye. Suggested reading: All My Sons by Arthur Miller.

The program concludes on Sunday, May 1, 2011 with a discussion of Little Women by Allan Knee, with music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, running May 3-22. Based on Louisa May Alcott's classic novel, Little Women follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America. Brought to life as an exhilarating new musical filled with glorious music, dancing and heart, this wonderful narrative soars with the sounds of personal discovery, heartache and hope, the sounds of a young America finding its voice. Suggested reading: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott; or March by Geraldine Brooks; or Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women by Harriet Resisen.
